Summary

People use fish oil for many of the main benefits including nourishing the skin, eyes and memory, as well as increasing mental acuity and productivity. Available in capsule and liquid form, fish oil supplements can easily replace fish products in the diet and make a great addition to your daily wellness regimen.

What is fish oil?

As the name suggests, fish oil is derived from the fat or oil of fish tissue. Manufacturers typically use oily or fatty fish such as tuna, herring, or mackerel. However, fish oil also comes from the liver of other fish, e.g. B. from cod liver, which has been used for many centuries.

Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to the human body and have many health benefits. The World Health Organization recommends eating 1-2 servings of fish per week for the potential benefits. As this guideline may be difficult, some people prefer to substitute fish for fish with fish oil supplements as it is a more convenient and uncomplicated way to get omega-3.

Although omega-3 is primarily found in fish oil, there are other sources of these fatty acids. They are also found in many plants, such as chia seeds, Brussels sprouts, seaweed oil, hemp seeds, walnuts, and more. Even though these are high in omega-3, our bodies can easily digest the acids from fish oil.

What are omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids or omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids essential for well-being. Since many people do not have fish products in their diet, they use dietary supplements as their main source of omega-3 fatty acids. The main fatty acids in fish oil are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while plant sources mainly contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). While ALA is also important for optimal well-being, the omegas EPA and DHA have greater well-being benefits.

Also, the body converts ALA found in soybean and flaxseed oil into small amounts of EPA and DHA. However, the best sources of EPA and DHA are seafood. These sources include fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, anchovies, and shellfish such as clams, crab, or oysters. Most dietary supplements use fish oil as a source of EPA and DHA, while some algae oils may provide a vegetarian source of DHA.

The essential omega-3 fatty acids are essential for many bodily functions such as muscle function, digestion, the brain, bones and cell growth. Even our brains use DHA for development and proper functioning. When our body lacks these fatty acids, an imbalance can occur.

What is the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6?

Today’s diet is characterized by a higher omega-6 and a lower omega-3 fatty acid ratio. The right balance of these acids is an important factor in overall well-being because it can help stabilize the body.

Experts used to recommend an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 3:1 to 4:1. However, they now seem to prefer a ratio of 1:1 to 2:1 as this is consistent with studies on diet development.

What forms of fish oil are there?

Since not everyone likes to eat fish, manufacturers have developed various fish oil supplements to meet all needs and personal eating habits. Therefore, fish oil comes in the following forms:

Natural fish oil

This is the oil from the tissues of oily fish, usually in the form of triglycerides. It’s the purest way to consume omega-3 fatty acids. This form of oil contains many important nutrients. The content of omega-3 fatty acids in natural fish oil is between 18 and 31%, depending on the type of fish. In addition, natural fish oil contains vitamins A and D.

Processed fish oil

Processed fish oil is either purified or concentrated. It consists mainly of ethyl esters or triglycerides. The cleaning process removes contaminants including mercury and PCBs, a group of harmful chemicals. Concentrated fish oil may have higher levels of EPA and DHA. Some fish oils can even contain up to 90% pure EPA and/or DHA.

Although processed fish oil lacks several essential nutrients, it is very popular with consumers among consumers. That’s because it’s cheaper than natural oil and usually comes in capsules, making it convenient to consume. However, these fish oils may have lower bioavailability compared to natural oil.
