Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Jail or Fremantle Gaol is another name for Fremantle Prison. England’s most dangerous criminals were housed in a maximum-security prison erected between 1851 and 1859. 

As a result, inmates from Australia were housed in the prison in 1886 when local authorities took control of it for the first time in more than twenty years.

With its Victorian-style building and a division for female offenders, Fremantle Prison is evocative of jails from the 19th century. As a heritage site since 1991, Fremantle Prison is open to the public.

Perth Zoo
